Calcium (pronounced /ˈkælsiəm/) is the chemical element with the symbol Ca and atomic number 20. It has an atomic mass of 40.078 amu. Calcium is a soft grey alkaline earth metal, and is the fifth most abundant element by mass in the Earth's crust. Calcium is also the fifth most abundant dissolved ion in seawater by both molarity and mass, after sodium, chloride, magnesium, and sulfate.

Calcium is essential for living organisms, particularly in cell physiology, where movement of the calcium ion Ca into and out of the cytoplasm functions as a signal for many cellular processes. As a major material used in mineralization of bones and shells, calcium is the most abundant metal by mass in many animals.

How Long Does it Take for a calcium deficient bird to get better?
Q. My chicken has severe calcium deficiency and can't stand up. I've been feeding her milk and cottage cheese ( she wont eat oyster shells), i've been doing this for about two weeks, any idea on how long it takes before she can get up? I took her to the vet and he said she was calcium deficient. He said she can't control her muscles in her legs and she was weak.

A. Go buy powdered calcium & sprinkle over food she likes. How do you know she is calcium deficient? I think I would try a good broad spectrum antibiotic from farm supply store.

How to get rid of calcium crystal from toilet bowl?
Q. There are dark stains around the toilet bowl.I found it difficult to remove them.I used Harpic cleaning gel but it doesn't work.Any altenative product that I can use to remove the stain?I believe the stain is caused by not flushing the toilet bowl on a regular basis.I think it is the residue of calcium crystal deposits that caused the stain.

A. The cleaners listed above are what I use. You may also need some manual scrubbing. There are two alternatives. One is a cleaning screen sold in grocery and hardware stores. It's a square about 4"x4". It takes off most of the scale. don't use it with the above cleaning compounds unless you wear gloves. The second is a pumice stone. Just a hunk of pumice also sold at hardware store or janitorial stores. This is probably the last resort for removing that stain. Sounds like a rust stain, so you can also try Whink's Rust remover (hardware stores) saturate paper towel with the stuff and set on top of stain. After about 35 years, my toilet has lost it's porcelain at the water line from all the cleaners and scrubbing. Only solution… [cont.]
