Beta blockers (sometimes written as β-blocker) is a class of drugs used for various indications, but particularly for the management of cardiac arrhythmias, cardioprotection after myocardial infarction (heart attack), and hypertension. As beta adrenergic receptor antagonists, they diminish the effects of epinephrine (adrenaline) and other stress hormones. Invented by Sir James W. Black in the late 1950s, Propranolol was the first clinically useful beta blocker; it revolutionized the medical management of angina pectoris and is considered to be one of the most important contributions to clinical medicine and pharmacology of the 20th century. Beta blockers may also be referred to as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, beta-adrenergic antagonists, or beta antagonists.

Beta blockers block the action of endogenous catecholamines (epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) in particular), on β-adrenergic receptors, part of the sympathetic nervous system which mediates the "fight or flight" response. There are three known types of beta receptor, designated β1, β2 and β3. β1-Adrenergic receptors are located mainly in the heart and in the kidneys. β2-Adrenergic receptors are located mainly in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, liver, uterus, vascular smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle. β3-receptors are located in fat cells.

Examples of beta-blockers include: acebutolol, betaxolol, bisoprolol, esmolol, propranolol, atenolol, labetalol, carvedilol, metoprolol, and nebivolol.

The after effects of coming off beta blockers?
Q. My doctor took me off a beta blocker because it was causing me to lose sleep. He put me straight onto a calcium channel blocker. I thought that it was not good to stop a beta blocker but to reduce it gradually. I read that to stop it without reducing the dose can cause palpitations, which I find I am having. Will these palpitations stop once my body has got used to the new tablets?

A. It should yes... beta blockers reduce your heart rate, and if you go off them abrubtly, your heart race may then increase rapidly... "reflex tachycardia" tapering down the dose helps to avoid this.

A. I was in the exact situation you are currently in, (inderal, 10mg I think)... Anyway, the problem is that beta blockers prevent your heart beat from increasing. This is great when your body tends to put your heart into overdrive for no reason, but you need to be able to increase your heart rate when you exercise so that your body can continue to function. If you exercise too hard and your heart can't keep up you will damage your muscles and your heart because your body is not able to supply the tissue with adequate oxygen. You are supposed to use a RPE scale when on beta blockers. This stands for rating of percieved excertion (sp?). Most gyms are required to have them posted. It is a scale that helps people to exercise at a healthy… [cont.]
